“Sky Veil introduces color and interactivity with the surrounding landscape in these spaces so the surroundings are experienced through a new lens and the complexity of fragmented reflections challenges the mind to become alive to its environment.”

A Look Back at The Salt Lake City Library…

This month we celebrate the anniversary of the Salt Lake City Public Library completion. In February 2003, this beautiful building opened its doors to the public and now over a decade later, library administration estimates roughly 1 million people visit each year. VCBO Architecture teamed with internationally-acclaimed architect, Moshe Safdie, to design what we feel is an urban masterpiece.

It has been said by Stephen Goldsmith (University of Utah professor of architecture and Salt Lake City’s former Planning Director), that this library signaled a new era of architecture in Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake City Main Library has earned numerous awards and was ranked in the top 150 favorite buildings in a nationwide poll commissioned by the AIA. However, more important to us than any award is the satisfaction that comes from watching a space come to life as a community enjoys it. In addition to visiting the library itself, Library Square is home to a growing number of festivals, concerts and events. Whether it is reading; accessing the internet; viewing a film, presentation, art exhibit; attending workshops, children’s events or festivals, this public library is truly an architectural and cultural icon.

The natural daylighting throughout the spaces, the striking spiral staircase that winds from floor to floor, and the rooftop garden are just a few of the building’s fantastic features. It is difficult to choose a favorite!

Architect, Jeanne Jackson shared some thoughts about the Library: “As the Project Architect for our firm, the best part of working on The City Library project was the opportunity to collaborate with a world class architect, as well as an engaged and intelligent client, to create an inspiring place for our community.  It was a life-changing experience for all of us who were involved!”
Moshe Safdie said: “The outcome at the end is only as good as the client and the city planning department and the groups who support it. This is a community triumph. “We enjoy many activities in this facility and we hope you do as well!
