Architectural research has a long and varied history at the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Most recently, the AIA has embarked on a number of activities to understand the needs of the profession around research and the AIA’s role to help meet such needs, in order to help advance the profession toward a more research-supported discipline.
Most notably, the AIA held a series of Research Summits (2007, 2011, 2012) that helped differentiate and organize the language of research in the profession, such as articulating the differences between highly rigorous, peer-reviewed research and less formal practice-based case studies and learnings. Research also plays a key role in various initiatives throughout the AIA, which includes the AIA Design & Health Research Consortium, sustainability programs (including the Materials group), and Knowledge Community research programs. The Architects Foundation also helps conduct and support research, such as through the National Resilience Initiative.
