We are so pleased that the new S.J. Quinney College of Law Building at the University of Utah is one of the most sustainable buildings in Salt Lake City, and the most sustainable building on the U campus. It was designed to LEED Platinum standards and will be one of only two law schools in the U.S. with this rating. The building is slated to open for Fall Semester 2015, which means the users have already started to move in!
We believe it is vital for the building users to become aware of the sustainable design and construction strategies inherent in the building, as well as how they can exist in the building more sustainably. “Specifically within commercial buildings, the use and operation phase of the material and building life cycle is so dominant that the impacts of construction, demolition/disposal, and transportation are nearly irrelevant for most traditionally constructed buildings” (Journal of Green Building). In an effort to help the faculty, staff and students understand the unique and sustainable features of their new building, we have created a very thorough user manual. This manual identifies key spaces within the building that will be used on a daily basis by the users. It highlights new or innovative operational strategies, identifies sustainable building elements and provides guidance on how each individual can reduce their impact as they learn, study and work in the building. We are so honored to have been part of this design process over the last several years, and so be part of the ever evolving University of Utah campus history.
